Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust is a modern, progressive Trust with a reputation for clinical excellence and efficiency.


The Challenge

As part of their continued development plan, Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust wanted to be able to communicate more effectively with the local South Yorkshire residents and introduce an engaging intranet for their staff. The legacy public site lacked any form of interaction, had a poor user interface and content was stale and uninformative.

The intranet site was little more than a telephone directory and did not engage the Trust's 4000+ staff. Trust communications were very much email based with the intranet being the last place staff sought guidance, information and news. Colleagues did not share good practice and ideas across the medium as it was regarded as out of date and inaccurate.

The Solution 

Green River Media built an interactive website using Ektron’s CMS and an informative intranet which complied with W3C web content accessibility standards (conformance at WCAG 2.0 priority level AA). By engaging with Trust users, Green River Media built a comprehensive requirements specification to ensure that staff felt  involved in the build experience. Workshops which focused on design and usability were held, as well as a rigorous review of the right taxonomy for both public and intranet sites. Iterative cleansing and an update of the Trust's public and private document libraries were led by Green River Media and engagement and consultation continued throughout the process with a 'Name our Intranet' competition and preview sessions with key staff.

The Results

Compliant with the NHS brand guidelines, overall, the design and structure of the sites are cleaner, more concise and more attractive, therefore enhancing the end user experience. Before and after reports showed a significant increase in website page views. Staff services and features such as classified ads and question and answer interactions reduced the volume of email and rapidly led to the intranet site being the first place to look for information, support and documentation. As the Content Management System is easy to use, the support required from the local IT team has been significantly reduced.

Our Communications and Marketing teams are exceptionally happy with our new sites. They can manage content easily, without relying on IT which speeds up the process and makes content more dynamic. Users who found the previous intranet site dull, uninformative and out-of-date are now using the site as their homepage.
